Death Toll Passes 23,000 In Earthquake

Turkey and Syrian death tolls rise

Posted: one year ago

The death toll has risen to more than 23,000 in the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria. The World Bank will provide $1.78 billion to Turkey. Meanwhile the US will send $85m in aid. Monday's disaster is the deadliest to strike the country in more than 80 years. Survivors, many of whom are homeless, could face "a secondary disaster" as cold and snow lead to "worsening and horrific conditions,". Fearful of another earthquake, some people have chosen to stay out in the open, avoiding buildings that appeared intact, and to brave the subzero temperatures.
