Avery was riding a Harley Davidson Electra Glide Ultra westbound when two motorcyclists ahead of him attempted to avoid an oncoming vehicle. The first motorcyclist swerved, left the roadway, and overturned. The second motorcyclist slowed down, causing Avery to strike his vehicle from behind. Avery was transported to Cox Medical Center South in Springfield with serious injuries. The other motorcyclists involved were also transported to Springfield hospitals.
