The U.S. Geological Survey said the 4.8 magnitude quake was centered in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, at 10:23 a.m. People from New York City to Portland, Maine, to Montreal to Richmond, Virginia, reported feeling it. The quake was likely on the Ramapo fault, which runs through the Appalachians up through New Jersey and then into downstate New York.
